Projectors: LCD Verses DLP (The downfall of DLP technology)

The typical question heard when looking for a new projector for the home, office, or classroom is: do I take an LCD projector or a DLP projector? LCD, which stands for ‘liquid crystal device’ and DLP, which stands for ‘digital light processing’ are the two top projector imaging technologies. With so many business brands and different types available, it can be challenging for the buyer to choose between the two technologies. The simple fact of the matter is that LCD projectors provide far better image quality and colour accuracy. The next part of this article will tell you why DLP projectors struggle with creating the same standard of image quality.

Imagine a set of blinds in your house covering your bedroom window. With the twist of a rod you can have the shutters open or closed, according to if you want to let light in or not. Such is exactly how an LCD projector works. Each pixel functions like a unique shutter on a set of blinds to either allow light through or to block it. DLP on the other hand is constructed of millions of microscopic mirrors or ‘pixel elements’ as experts like to call them. Each pixel element operates to either reflect light or block it.

How the light source is processed from the time the projector turns on to when the picture reaches your screen is absolutely significant for image quality, brightness and colour accuracy. LCD projectors direct white light from the lamp by splitting it into red, blue and green components, by three mirrors which send the coloured light to 3 different LCD panels. The 3 LCD panels cast the elements of the image by switching each pixel on and off. The pixels are then projected in a glass prism to create the projector image. A significant point to understad about LCD projectors is that all three colours are delivered onto your screen at the same time. The way a DLP projector runs is vastly different and even the way an image appears is not the same. With DLP, white light from the lamp is processed through a turning colour wheel with transparent red, blue and green segments, at speeds up to 11,000 rpm/s. This way of projecting an image forms a sequence of red, blue and green light. The millions of micro mirrors as described above reflect the coloured light on the pixels to create the image elements. The elements of the image are projected in sequence on the screen, one colour at a time. The viewer’s vision will then put together each coloured element of the image into the total image. From LCD projectors, all colours are available all the time to form the highest brightness and great colour accuracy. In DLP, just one colour is available at once, and so causing lower colour brightness and accuracy. Some DLP developers have added a white segment for the colour wheel to improve brightness generally, but this further detracts from colour accuracy.

I find in forums all the time that DLP offers a higher contrast ratio and as such must be superior. For those who are unaware, the contrast ratio is a measure of a display system defined as the ratio of the luminance of the brightest white to that of the darkest black that the projector is capable of. DLP projectors do offer high contrast specifications when compared to many LCD projectors. At first glance, this seems to be a benefit, however, in truth, the true black level is determined by the ambient light in the room where the projector is used. Do not be tricked by contrast specifications on websites and in brochures.

When the content you want to view requires moving images, DLP projection technology also creates image marks, or ‘artifacts’. The most often seen artifact that a DLP projector shows with moving images is colour break up. Colour break up is to be expected in DLP systems because moving images change between the time red, blue and green colours are projected. LCD projectors do not have this characteristic because all colours are delivered at the same time. DLP manufacturers have formed 3DLP solutions using 3 chips to fix the colour break up artifacts, but the cost of these projectors make them not practical for the large part of businesses and consumers.

Another differentiation between LCD and DLP is how they make up for the refractive qualities of light. Take yourself back to high school science, and they taught you how different colours of light refract various amounts when directed through the same lens. The downfall with DLP projectors is that they have the one same panel for the same lens to project Red, Blue and Green. All 3 colours are obviously different and refract light in different ways. Usually with a DLP projector, a spill of yellow colour will be projected above and some extra blue will come up below an image as simple as a lone black line. In building LCD projectors can be adapted to minimize these effects on the projected image, as each colour is processed on isolated LCD panels.

The only actual benefit (excluding price) with choosing a DLP projector is its smaller size and weight. However, this is only relevant in regard to transporting the device and cannot be traded off against the image superiority of LCD projectors. Yachting and Yacht Clubs

As the Dutch came to dominance in sea power during the 17th century, the first yacht became a pleasure craft used first by royalty and then by the burghers for the canals and then in the protected and unprotected waters of the Low Countries. Racing was incidental, coming out of private challenges. English yachting started with King Charles II of England during his exile in the Low Countries. On his restoration to the English throne in 1660, the city of Amsterdam presented him with a 20-metre (66-foot) leisure boat with a beam (maximum width) of 5.6 m (18 feet), which he named Mary. Charles and his brother James, the duke of York (James II, ruled 1685–88), built other yachts and in 1662 raced two of them from the Thames, from Greenwich, to Gravesend, and back, on a £100 bet. Yachting became fashionable with the wealthy and nobility, but after that point the trend did not last.

The first yacht association in the British Isles, the Water Club, was started around about 1720 at Cork, Ire., as a cruising and unofficial coast guard group, with much naval panoply and rigour. The closest thing to racing was the “chase,” for which the “fleet” pursued a fictional enemy. The club went on, for the large part as a social club, until 1765, and in 1828, after conglomerating with other clubs, it was known as the Cork Yacht Club (later the Royal Cork Yacht Club).

Yacht racing began in some ordered method on the Thames around the mid-18th century. The duke of Cumberland funded the Cumberland Fleet for Thames racing in 1775. When George IV ascended to the throne in 1820, it was then known as the Fleet to His Majesty’s Coronation Sailing Society. The Thames Yacht Club seceded following a racing fight, to become the Royal Thames Yacht Club in 1830. The first English yacht group had been formed at Cowes on the Isle of Wight in 1815, and royal patronage made the Solent - the strait between the mainland and the Isle of Wight - the continued setting of British racing. The association at Cowes became the Royal Yachting Club, again at the ascension of George IV. All members were required to have boats of at least 20 tons (20,321 kg). Sailing tests for great bets were held, and the social life was wonderful. Ultimately Royal Yachting Club boats were raised in size to more than 350 tons.

In North America, yachting began with the Dutch in New York in the 17th century and continued when the English gained control. Sailing was largely for fun and found its high point in George Crowinshield’s Cleopatra’s Barge (1815), which sailed on the Mediterranean Sea and established a standard of luxury and sophistication for the later yachts in those waters from the late 19th century. The first persisting American yacht society, the Detroit Boat Club, was started in 1839. In 1844, John C. Stevens began the New York Yacht Club while aboard his schooner Gimcrack.

Kinds of sailboats
The Early sailing yachts were within the lines of such naval craft as brigantines, schooners, and cutters from the 17th century through to the second half of the 19th century. The style of sizeable yachts was initially largely impacted by the victory of America, which was designed by George Steers for a club led by John C. Stevens, and it was the boat for which the America’s Cup (q.v.) had its namesake after its win at Cowes in 1851. Earlier yachts were not designed and manufactured in the modern sense, with only a model for an outline. Not until the second half of the 19th century did what was known as naval architecture come into action. Not until the 1920s did the employment of the science of aerodynamics do for the structure of sails and rigging what it had earlier done for hulls.

Because nearly all sailboats were individually manufactured, there arose a desire for handicapping boats previous to the one-design class boats were made. Therefore, a rating rule came into being, which resulted in the International Rule, taken on in 1906 and revised in 1919. Today, one of the rapidly blossoming areas in the sailing industry is that of one-design class boats. All boats in a one-design class are created to standard requirements in length, beam, sail area, and other aspects (for an example of a two-person sailboat, see illustration). Racing those boats can be held on an even playing field with no handicapping necessary. A perfect example is the standard International America’s Cup Class taken on board for participants in the 1992 America’s Cup race.

As long as yachting belonged mostly for the aristocracy and the wealthy, expense was no problem, and the size of boats grew, in both length and weight. The ascendancy and desire of smaller yachts came in the second half of the 19th century from the sailing of the Englishmen R.T. McMullen, a stockbroker, and E.F. Knight, a barrister and journalist. A journey around the world (1895–98) sailed single-handedly by the naturalized American captain Joshua Slocum in the 11.3-metre Spray proved the seaworthiness of less sizeable yachts. Later in the 20th century, notably after World War II, smaller racing and leisure craft became more common, down to the dinghy, a favoured training boat, of 3.7 m. In the late 20th century, boats of less than 3 m were setting sail single-handedly across the Atlantic Ocean.

Kinds of power yachts
After the decade 1840–50, in which steam started to take the place of sail power in market boats, the steam engine, and later the internal-combustion engine, were increasingly employed in leisure vessels. Sizeable power yachts were furthered to a high standard, and long-distance cruising became a preferred pastime of the affluent. The first power yachts were paddle-wheel boats; they then made way to yachts powered by the completely submerged screw or propeller type of propulsion. As in the case of naval and merchant craft, auxiliaries possessing both sail and power were the yacht fashion for a number of years. By the later half of the 20th century, a lot of yachts were still auxiliaries, but the majority were exclusively power yachts containing gasoline or diesel engines.

In the last decade of the 19th century there was a boom in the construction of more sizeable steam yachts. Notably among these was the Mayflower (1897) of 2,690 tons, with triple-expansion engines, twin screws, and a compartmented iron hull, and was sailed by a crew of over 150. The Mayflower, bought by the United States Navy in 1898, was the official yacht of the president of the United States until 1929 and gave active service for World War II.

As bigger and more dependable internal-combustion engines were produced, many big yachts started using them for power. The establishment of the diesel engine, with heavy oil for fuel, advanced in World War I. From the decade after that, large power-yacht creation flourished, reaching a climax in the Orion (1930) at 3,097 tons. In that period the best auxiliary yacht built was the four-masted, steel, barque-rigged Sea Cloud (1931) of 2,323 tons.

The manufacture of big power boats declined from 1932, and the style from then was in preference of smaller, less pricey yachts. From World War II, a lot of small naval vessels were traded by private owners for conversion to yachts. By the late 20th century, yachting had become a globally loved competition enjoyed by thousands of yachtsmen who are actually manning and upkeeping their own small leisure yachts. The popularity of boats and owners has increased steadily, not only in the traditional areas on the beach but also on inland waterways and lakes.

Proportional, Progressive, and Regressive taxes

Taxes are categorized by the impact they have on the placement of income and wealth. A proportional tax is a kind that impinges the same relative burden on each taxpayer—i.e., where tax liability and income grow in the same levels. A progressive tax is characterizable by a more than proportional growth in the tax burden in relation to the increase in income, and a regressive tax is characterized by a less than proportional rise in the relative liability. So, progressive taxes are thought of as removing the lack of equality in income distribution, while regressive taxes might have the result of increasing these inequalities.

The taxes that are normally considered progressive include individual income taxes and estate taxes. Income taxes that are nominally progressive, however, could become less so for the upper-income group—particularly if a taxpayer is able to lessen his tax base by claiming deductions or by taking certain income aspects from his taxable income. Proportional tax rates when applied to lower-income groups will also be more progressive if personal exemptions are made.

Income measured over a given year does not definitely offer the most accurate measure of taxpaying ability. For example, transitory growth in income might be saved, and in temporary declines in income a taxpayer could opt to finance consumption by reducing savings. Thus, if taxation is regarded with “permanent income,” it should be less regressive (or more progressive) than if it is held in comparison with annual income.

Sales taxes and excises (save luxuries) are generally regressive, because the spread of personal income consumed or spent for a specific good lessens as the level of personal income is raised. Poll taxes (also termed head taxes), nominated as a set amount per capita, clearly are regressive.

It is not easy to term corporate income taxes and taxes on business as progressive, regressive, or proportionate, principally because of the uncertainty regarding the ability of businesses to shift their tax expenses (see below Shifting and incidence). This difficulty of deciding who bears the tax burden rests fundamentally on whether a national or a subnational (that is, provincial or state) tax is being debated.

In regarding the economic effects of taxation, it is necessary to distinguish between varied points of tax rates. The statutory rates will be specified in the legislation; often these are marginal rates, but for some cases they are average rates. Marginal income tax rates indicate the fraction of incremental income taken by taxation when income is increased by one dollar. So, if tax liability increases by 45 cents when income grows by one dollar, the marginal tax rate is 45 percent. Income tax laws commonly contain graduated marginal rates—i.e., rates that rise as income grows. Careful analysis of marginal tax rates are required to regard provisions as well as the formal statutory rate structure. If, for example, a particular tax credit (reduction in tax) decreases by 20 cents for each one-dollar growth in income, the marginal rate is 20 percentage points greater than specified in the statutory rates. Since marginal rates display how after-tax income is changed in response to changes in before-tax income, they are the relevant ones for appraising incentive effects of taxation. It is even more difficult to understand the marginal effective tax rate applied to income from business and capital, since it may depend on factors including the structure of depreciation allowances, the deductibility of interest, and the provisions for inflation adjustment. A basic economic theorem grants that the marginal effective tax rate in income from capital is nothing under a consumption-based tax.

Average income tax rates signify the fraction of total income that is taken in taxation. The pattern of average rates is the one that is necessary for considering the distributional equity of taxation. Under a progressive income tax the average income tax rate increases with income. Average income tax rates generally grow with income, both because personal allowances are permitted for the taxpayer and dependents and also because marginal tax rates are graduated; on the other hand, preferential treatment of income received fundamentally by high-income households can dampen these effects, producing regressivity, as displayed by average tax rates that lessen as income increases.
